The Tradeshow Experience

We just returned from our first tradeshow experience. We showcased Muscle Relief Gel at the Natural Products Association 71st Annual Tradeshow in Las Vegas last week. What an experience!  We rolled into Las Vegas two days before the tradeshow started so that we could set up the day before the event began. We were one of the first businesses to set up, but we had a lot of prep work to finish (stapling packets together, folding brochures, etc).  It was pretty wild watching all of the other businesses slowly trickle in and set up. The large companies, like Xango and Now Products, were amazing to see. They must have spent tens of thousands of dollars on their tradeshow displays (not to mention several thousands they must have paid for their location on the floor!).

With our Kinkos banner and athletic event décor in hand, we set up our booth. The two days during the tradeshow consisted mostly of informing retailers and distributors about who we are, why we created/formulated Muscle Relief Gel, why it’s so great, and handing out samples and order forms. It was a lot of fun talking about our product and business, but by the end of each day we were exhausted!

We met a lot of very cool entrepreneurs including Michelle of Emani Mineral Cosmetics and Julie Breaux of Baby Breaux products. Meeting other women entrepreneurs is always a pleasure! Please check out their websites!

Being first time exhibitors we were unaware of the take down process at the end of the show. We thought we would just come back the next morning to break down our display. However, we soon found out what really happens. The tradeshow ended at 4:00pm, and at precisely 4:01pm the forklifts came out and the union workers started ripping up the showroom carpet. Even though we were ready to call it a day and head to the pool, it was actually nice to get everything done and cleaned up so that we could sleep in the next morning.

Overall, the tradeshow was a great experience. We made wonderful, quality contacts with retailers, distributors, and other entrepreneurs. And, we learned what we would change for our next tradeshow, and ideas for how to showcase our products better. Over the next few weeks I will be posting interviews and articles about some of the businesses we visited at the tradeshow!

Hi Elissa and Jerell, I just recently read the article in Entrepreneur (congrats!) and had to check out your site. Browsing the blog and reading this entry I found especially interesting. Mainly because tradeshows for our business is something my wife and I have been looking at doing. I work for a large hair care manufacturer(as we grow our startup) and we do shows all the time, I’ve worked more shows than I can count, so I feel you on the whole setup and take down. I’m really interested in hearing about the process of how you got into the show. From deciding which tradeshow to be at, what products to feature and or bring as well and hot tips you could provide for working with the shows corporate staff in getting into the tradeshow. Although our businesses are totally different, tradeshows are tradeshows, and my experience as a small business owner has not been all that succesful with trying to get into the niche tradeshows that our brand services. It’s frustrating when I see other businesses like ours that are in the exhibitor list when we are outside looking in.
Thanks so much,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your comments! The tradeshow was a complete last minute descision. We literally found out about it 3 weeks before the actual show and decided that it would be a good fit for our business because we wanted to promote the natural/organic qualities of our Muscle Relief Gel product. We also just recieved our first run of Muscle Relief Gel about 1 or 2 weeks before we found out about the tradeshow and were very pumped to find retailers and possibly distributors to carry our product.

It may be because it isn’t a specific tradeshow, (we haven’t tried getting into a fitness or athletic tradeshow yet) but the Natural Product Association was very easy to deal with! My husband just called the 800 number listed in their online materials, spoke with a wonderful lady named Colleen Rood and next thing we knew we were exhibitors at the tradeshow! We did have to pay to become members of the Natural Product Association first (becoming members of the associations/organizations in the industry you are starting up in might help get in specific tradeshows too).

I’m actually a bit surprised that you’ve had difficulty getting into tradeshows. With how much they make off the vendors (and trust me, they nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING!) I would think they would be more than happy to accomodate any size business.

It might have also helped us since it was such a last minute decision. They had about 15 -20 booths left, so they may have just been eager to fill the spaces. If you try this approach, be sure to ask if they can give you some kind of deal. We were able to snag a B spot for a D price (meaning we saved about $1300 and had a better location).

We chose to stay focused on Muscle Relief Gel because it is retail-ready (UPC barcoded - a must for larger retailers) and it is hands down our best-selling product. We supplied sample packets, info display cards, and order sheets. We also supplied info on our core bath and body business, SALUS, in the form of a brochure that we handed out with the Muscle Relief Gel packets.

Since you’ve worked the tradeshows, I’m sure you already know how it goes, but for anyone else reading…

We started out by waiting for people to come up to our booth or make eye contact. Then we’d go into our whole speech on who we are, why we’re so great, and why they need our product. Well, about 2 hours of doing this we realized the ladies next to us were getting far more attention by having one person handing out the samples and the other spending a moment with the more interested buyers on details. Once we did this, we had much more success pulling in prospective buyers and distributors.

I hope this information helps! I visited your website, http://www.salonteez.com and I like where you are going with it, plus your prices are very reasonable! Good luck with your tradeshow endeavors. Let us know if we can help answer further questions.

Hi Elissa,

Thanks for the response! it was really helpful. We are looking into the spring shows at the moment, only because the last minute gig is a bit frightening at this time. But definately something to think about for future. Sorry for the delayed response and thanks for checking out the site!
